John Ornelas
John, our director and a trusted advisor on the tax team, champions the right of individuals and businesses to minimize their tax obligations within the bounds of the law. With a focus on fostering cash flow growth and preserving wealth, he delivers comprehensive support through business advisory, strategic tax planning, and personal financial guidance.
John brings a wealth of tax and leadership experience honed through diverse roles in both public and private sectors. His unique background gives him a deep understanding of the complexities his clients face and the strategies required to keep them compliant while optimizing their tax positions.
Previously, John served as a senior tax compliance accountant at a regional CPA firm, where he prepared tax returns, plans, and projections for high-net-worth clients, their businesses, trusts, and family estates.
Before entering private practice, John investigated complex tax and financial fraud cases as a Special Agent with the IRS Criminal Investigation division. He collaborated with data science teams to analyze how tax laws and return forms integrate into modern e-filing systems, leveraging big data to identify potential noncompliance. John also oversaw programs focused on fraudulent refunds and questionable return preparation, assisting colleagues in unraveling intricate financial transactions and structures.
Earlier in his career, John conducted tax audits and verified refund claims for small and mid-sized businesses as an auditor with the State of Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts. This role allowed him to gain deep expertise in Texas state taxes, including sales and use tax applications across a wide range of industries and sector-specific tax assessments.
Outside the office, John enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He likes working on home improvement projects, exploring science fiction through books and movies, and trying his hand at new recipes in the kitchen.
